Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM)

Strategic human resource management involves a future-oriented process of developing and implementing HR programs that address and solve business problems and directly contribute to major long-term business objectives(SHRM, 2023).

Importance of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM)

Businesses that ensure collaboration amongst all teams, and synchronized working towards common objectives, succeed faster. By applying strategic HR practices, employees can be analyzed and the actions that will lead to value addition for the company, can be identified. If a company’s HR personnel don’t know much about strategic human resource management, they can enroll for HR courses online to understand the concepts thoroughly and implement the same in the organization. There are various benefits of applying strategic human resource management for any business(EMIRITUS, n.d.).

 These include:

  • Ø  Increased job satisfaction
  • Ø  Better work culture
  • Ø  Improved rates of customer satisfaction
  • Ø  Efficient resource management
  • Ø  A proactive approach to managing employees
  • Ø  Productivity boost

How to create a Strategic Human Resource Management plan

Now that you have a better understanding of what Strategic HRM is and why it matters, let’s explore how to create and implement a strategic plan for your organization(Vulpen, n.d.).

Although there is no one specific Strategic Human Resource Management model to follow, there are some best practices to be mindful of.

The following five tips will help you implement truly Strategic HRM:

  1.  Create an HR strategic plan that follows the business
  2.  Align HR activities with the strategy
  3.  Emphasize data
  4.  Don’t forget HR’s other responsibilities
  5.   Take an outside-in approach

Strategic Human Resource Management-Basics and Framework

  • The framework of Strategic HR Management
  • Key stakeholders in Strategic HR Management(LPC, n.d.).

Some common examples of SHRM programs and policies include

Performance management: Creating systems to track and improve employee                                  performance

Training and development: Identifying employees’ development needs and providing    training and resources to help them improve

Compensation and benefits: Designing compensation and benefits programs that attract and retain employees

Employee relations: Managing employee relations to create a positive work environment

These are just a few examples of the types of programs and policies that can be part of SHRM. The specific programs and policies will vary depending on the company’s goals and the needs of its employees(Forbes , n.d.).

Conclusion.

In today's competitive world, strategic human resources management is a critical part of the success of an organization. The success of strategic human resources planning contributes to organizational success only when it is well-aligned with company objectives and has an employee-centric approach.
